My interest in sustainability has not been direct nor obvious. But I've always been curious. As a humanities major graduate I fascinated in learning about the context of events in which we make decisions that impact and create our personal experiences and shared history. For the last fifteen years I have worked in the real estate development industry, primarily as a sustainability professional. In this role I operate to implement measures to maximize energy efficiencies, enhance occupant wellness, and promote responsible resource use in the built environment. Therefore the content of my writing may tilt more towards real estate development and building design and construction. However, sustainability as a topic concept is broad and dynamic, and its intricacies are very interrelated across all market sectors.
Our ambition drives a natural tendency for enterprise, which is expressed in entrepreneurial pursuits. Yet, our aspirations have impacts, which are intrinsically tied to our success potential. To thrive for the long-term we need to account for those impacts. In essence, my work and research here seeks to understand more about how we balance our infinite spirit and ambitions in a world of finite resources.
I believe we live in a transitional time where concepts such as "Green," Corporate Social Responsibility ("CSR") and "ESG" have matured to the point of scaled influence. Businesses now, perhaps more than ever, are being spurred to manage reputational risks, and respond to shifts in awareness and demands from informed consumers, investors, and markets. In effort to preserve their "social contract" to operate, some companies are attempting to respond with new solutions, products, and services that are better aligned with a need to account for and improve all forms of capital: financial, social, manufactured, human, and natural.
I invite you to follow along as I research, write, and gain insight into how business are adapting in response to the growing market demand for increased transparency and accountability. In effort to facilitate understanding I've provided a rolling list of Key Terms commonly used in discussion on sustainability topics. So subscribe to my Blog to be notified of new posts. Also, browse the Sustainable Resources page for helpful links to tools, research, and initiatives that support sustainable approaches to both personal and corporate decision making.
All the Best,
Rudy De La O
